STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

At Florian Martial Arts Center our goal is not just to teach the martial arts to our students, but more importantly improve the quality of their lives.The discipline of strength and conditioning is a perfect pairing with our martial arts training because it leads to ultimately the same goal of self control and confidence.

Patrick Crowley is the strength and conditioning coach at Florian Martial Arts Center. For the past five years, he has been working training everyone from professional athletes, to children, to senior citizens and everyone in between.

It’s easy for any coach (any person for that matter) to put someone through a workout and make them tired. You can tell any professional athlete to do as many burpees as he/she can in 2 minutes and they’re going to get exhausted. However that won’t necessarily improve their performance when it counts.

Our approach is to first assess our client’s quality of motion. Based on these results, we coach proper mechanics and continue with primary training.

The overall goal is to improve one’s quality of life, whether it’s helping them perform better in jiu jitsu (or any other sport), having more energy to play with their kids and support an active lifestyle.

A main tool we use in these classes besides the body itself is the Kettlebell. A Kettlebell is a traditional Russian training tool that has been used since the turn of the century to develop full body conditioning and fitness.

The reason we use the Kettlebell is because of its effectiveness and its versatility.

A Kettlebell looks like a cannonball with a handle. The shape of the Kettlebell allows for unique positioning of the weight directly above your center of mass (unlike a Dumbell or Barbell which must be held in front of the body) and allows you to keep your hand and wrists in neutral alignment.

This provides for greater endurance and longevity in the core lifts so that you can produce a much higher volume of exercise and thus greater conditioning and fitness.
